Jessie was not happy. She’d need to stay three months in the “country” with Aunt Mary. She could not imagine an entire summer without social media. Did Montana even have Internet access?
The air was crisp, for a June morning, when she stepped out of her aunt’s truck and onto the ranch. She had heard “big sky country” often but never understood Montana’s nickname until gazing at the vast sea of blue overhead.
Jessie aimlessly wandered the ranch, longing to go home. A young paint whinnied and bobbed his head as she rounded the barn.
“You two have something in common,” Aunt Mary said.
“What’s that?”
Mary smiled broadly, “He doesn’t talk either.”
Jessie returned the smile. “Can I feed him?”
“You can do more than feed him. Outlaw needs a good trot around the corral. Are you interested in riding him?”
Jessie’s twinkling eyes confirmed that she was interested. “I’ve never been on a horse before,” she admitted. “Outlaw seems like a funny name, especially when he seems so nice,” she said as he nuzzled her hand to feed the animal. read next
